Rhodes is situated in the Aegean sea near the Turkish coast and is the largest of the Dodecanese islands. It has benefited from the protection of the sun since mythological times. The legend goes that the island rose out of the sea when the world was divided between the different gods and was attributed to Helios. However, it owes it name to the nymph Rhodos, wife of the sun god.
The small island is littered with tributes to the sun, although hardly anything remains of its greatest monuments. The Colossus, which is the ultimate symbol of worship, has completely disappeared.
