Rhodes Town

1. Accommodation

Hotels are classed according to six different categories. Luxury hotels can be found in the new part of town or on the east coast, but they tend to lack character. That is why we would advise you to choose more traditional accommodation in the heart of the old part of town, such as in family-run inns or even directly in local people's homes. A word of warning - remember to book in advance if travelling in the height of season!

2. Getting About

Access to the centre of Rhodes by car is highly restricted. Besides, many of the locals prefer to get about on two wheels. You will easily be able to hire bikes or even mopeds. However, if you enjoy the peace and quiet, choose a bike - it takes more effort, but it makes a lot less noise!
If you fancy hiring a car, there are several agencies at the airport or in the new part of town. Make sure that you have an international driving licence before going on holiday! Otherwise, there is a bus service that runs to the east and west coasts of the island. Rhodes is also the ideal port of call for yachting holidays in the Aegean sea or even as the starting point for a cruise.

3. Shopping

The shops in the new part of town are nothing special. We preferred to buy some traditional souvenirs from the bazaar in the old part of town. Watch out for kitsch objects though, which can generally be identified by their Corinthian column-style packaging! However, the leather goods and shoes are fairly attractive and affordable. We found that the local crafts were the best: natural sponges from Chalki, honey and souma from Sianna, spices from Symi and the pottery from the old part of town.
You should be aware that the most touristy and lively streets in Rhodes are Sokratous and Pithagora.

4. Address Book

The Rhodes tourist office is open every day from 8 am to 7 pm, except Sundays, and can be found in Rimini Square.
