1) Traditional
Food
Rhodes offers countless opportunities for food and drink, from
fish specialities to grilled meat, without forgetting the traditional environment inherent in
its taverns.
|
You must try out
the mezedes, a variety of small Greek dishes often accompanied
by the local aperitif, ouzo. The ones that
most tickled our taste buds in order of preference were
dolmades, vine leaves filled with lamb and rice, fried in oil
and then served cold. Silke could not get enough of them! You
can also try out the kalamaraki (grilled squid), the tiropitta
with goat's cheese, and choriatiki salata, feta-based
traditional Greek salads. |
 |
In
addition to
these generous starters, you can try out all sorts of fish, particularly
sea bream and mullet, as well as grilled meat. You
can also taste some octopus if you really feel in the mood,
but we did not go much on it. Meat is
generally served cut into thin strips.
The two national cheeses, feta and kaseri, are a
real delight for your taste buds and are presented in the same way as parmesan.
 |
As far as desserts are concerned, try out the
honey-based pastries, such as pitta me meli or even loukoumades. And
where would we be without the famous Greek yoghurt, simply served
with sugar and honey - heaven! Otherwise, do not forget all
the fruit on offer, such as figs and pomegranates. |
The
national drink is quite simply cold water. Having said
that, the locals are quite partial to a
glass of wine during their meal or a nice cold lager in
one of the taverns to quench their thirst.

Nightlife
We have certainly made your mouth water, so
start your nights out with a good meal or a light snack
in one of the lively taverns. You can then go for
a stroll around the port or stay in your favourite bistro to take advantage
of the traditional shows on offer. A light and
sound show recounting the siege of Soliman the Magnificent is held
every evening in the local gardens. Check out the
shows given at the medieval Pit theatre and the national theatre.
